Indiginous Malaria Surfaces In Virginia Westmoreland Woman is diagnosed (July 1998)

Monroe Hall - A Westmoreland County woman has been diagnosed with malaria, the first time in 50 years the often-fatal parasitic disease has been traced to a mosquito bite in Virginia. It is also the first time since 1996 the disease has been transmitted through a mosquito in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

"This is a rare situation," said Dr. Holly Williams, an 'epidemiologist with the Center's Division of Parasitic Diseases.

This malaria case was transmitted by a mosquito in Virginia, it was not an imported case.
