Ochlerotatus canadensis
Proboscis: dark
Palpi: short, dark, with few white scales at tip and base of segment 4.
Head: Occiput with narrow yellowish-white scales in a broad median patch.
Thorax: Integument of scutum reddish brown, scutum clothed with narrow golden-brown scales. Posterior half-stripes of pale scalesare often present and extend anteriorly to middle of scutum. Pleura with small patches of appressed grayish-white scales.
Abdomen: 1st tergite with median patch of dark scales sprinkled with white. remaining segments with narrow basal white bands ( lacking in some specimens ) basolateral patches of white scales. The apical margin of the 7th and sometimes the 6th, white scaled.
Legs: Femora dark, posterior surface pale, knee spots white. tibiae dark, tipped with white basally and apically. Tarsal segments ringed with white both basally and apically...hind tarsi with rather broad white rings on segment 1 to 4, segment 5 entirely white.
Wing: Length about 3.2 to 4.0 mm scales narrow, dark.
Bionomics: Larvae develop in temporary or semipermanent shaded woodland pools containing fallen leaves or adjacent ditches to wooded areas. Overwinters as egg...larvae hatch in late Winter and Spring ...adults emerge in April, May and early June...live long time until late Summer. Sometimes, if conditions are right, a second brood may hatch off in mid to late Fall. The flight range is 1/4 mile or less. They are persistent biters.
