Ochlerotatus mitchellae

medium size mosquito

Proboscis:    dark with broad white-scaled ring at middle

Palpi:             short, dark, white tips and lightly speckled with white scales

Head:             median area of occiput with pale -yellow to golden-yellow lanceolate scales.

Thorax:         Itegument of scutum black; scutum clothed with narrow pale-golden scales dorsally, becoming dark bronze-brown laterally; a pair of narrow indefinite, submedian lines of pale-golden scales often present and extending the entire length of the scutum. Pleura with small sparse patches of moderately broad grayish-white scales.

Abdomen:    1st tergite with a median patch of white scales; remaining tergites dark-scaled, with narrow basal bands of white to yellowish-white and median patches of yellowish-white scales (the median patches may extend to the apical margin) basolateral patches of white scales. Venter primarily white-scaled.

Legs:             Femora black-scaled, speckled with white, posterior surface pale; knee spots white. Tibiae and first tarsal segment speckled with white, streaked with white on posterior surface. Hind tarsi with broad basal white rings on segment 2 to 4, segment 5  entirely white, front and middle tarsi with narrow basal white rings on segment 1 to 3. segments 4 and 5 entirely dark.

Wings:           length 3.0 to 4.0 mm, narrow ,dark scales.

Bionomics:    Larvae found in temporary rain-filled pools...usually in shallow, clear, partly shaded rain-water pools which hold water for moderately long periods...pools contain grass or some emergent      vegetation. They are severe biters and are attracted to light. Flight range ...1/2 to 1 mile.
